Dealer Sponsor: Coulle Region Adventures

Why I Chose NuCanoe
I chose NuCanoe for several reasons. First, the portability of it. It's a lot easier to load and unload than the 14 foot traditional canoe I had. I can load it and be on the road to my destination in under 10 minutes. Second, I wanted something that was safe and stable. I have fished and paddled in canoes and Kayaks that were not stable. It's hard to relax and enjoy the experience if I am constantly worrying about tipping over. I wanted something that when my wife or children went out, they wouldn't be afraid of tipping. I have never had a moment in my NuCanoe that I felt unsafe, even with two husky men sitting in it.

What I Like Best
Do I have to just pick one? It allows me to get to places that others can't. It is so stable that I have no problems taking my kids out on it. It gets me to the fish that others can't get to. It allows me to expose my children to the outdoors so they have a greater appreciation of it.

Why I Chose NuCanoe
I was looking for a kayak that would allow me to fish and hunt safely as well as with comfort. I did a lot of internet research and finally decided on NuCanoe even though I had never seen one in Colorado. Based on what I read on the internet as well as reading the NuCanoe forum, I was convinced this was the kayak for me.

What I Like Best
Simply stated, stability. I am an excellent swimmer, love the water and have no fears of swimming...so much so that I competed in an Xterra triathlon training for open water swimming and competing in a small yet very cold lake in Frisco, Colorado. All this said, I don't want to end up in the water unless I want to be in it. The Frontier gave me the confidence that I needed to not end up accidentally in the water.

What's Your Favorite NuCanoe Activity
Tough decision. I am more of a fisherman than a hunter but experiencing how stealthy and how easy my Frontier can blend into the surroundings while waterfowl hunting brings hunting even with fishing.

My Favorite NuCanoe Story
: My son and I launched our kayaks (me in my NuCanoe, he in his non-NuCanoe...working on getting him in a NuCanoe) at a local lake. I paddled out about 30 yards while he floated close to shore. I stood up to cast a lure and everyone on the shore gasped saying "watch this guy end up in the water". I did not hear them but my son told me about it later. We both laughed.

Why I Chose NuCanoe
My family suffered a tragedy several years ago involving kayaks. A good friend (and Team Nucanoe member - Chuck) let me try his Frontier. This re-sparked my interest in kayaking because of design, safety, and quality.

What I Like Best
Being a larger individual - I've been told I'm not fat, just big framed - I wanted a kayak that was more stable than what I had been in before. The fact that it is impossible for me to flip the Frontier made it an ideal choice for the activities I wanted to use it for.

Why I Chose NuCanoe
I wanted something versatile enough to go out in the big rivers, get me into hard to reach honey holes, but stand up to the abuse of the cold weather duck hunting!

What I Like Best
The ability to stand up and cast, I hate fishing sitting down.

SMACK Fishing Tournament Report by Kevin McCullough

The alarm went off at 2:00 Sunday morning to go fishing. The plan was to hit Barren River Lake in Kentucky for the SMACK (Sunday Morning Anglers of Central Kentucky) Tournament Series tournament. After a 2 hour drive and getting everything rigged up I was ready for the 6:00 launch.

I started out fishing some rip rap throwing crank baits and swim baits. After about an hour of no bites I moved spots and started throwing creature bait. I hooked a nice bass but was not prepared with my net. I have a fold up net that was not unfolded. I tried to lip him but he spit my lure back at me. A couple of years ago I went fishing with Blake and Deanna from NuCanoe. I left my net in the car and lost the biggest bass of my life because I could not get him in the boat. I vowed to never leave me net again. Well I didn’t leave it but it did me no good folded up in the back of my Frontier.

It wasn’t until 10:00 that I caught my first bass. It was a little 10 inch bass but I removed the skunk. The tournament ended a 1:00 so I had three hours left to catch two more fish for my 3 fish limit. I fished my third spot for a while before moving on. At this point I was thinking please just let me catch a couple of fish.

After paddling around a while I paddled to the back of a cove. When I got back there I noticed three kayaks already there on one bank and one kayak leaving. I figured I’d fish the opposite bank and come up behind the other yaks. After a couple of cast I hooked into a nice 16 inch bass. Alright 11:00 and two fish for 26 inches. I fished for another hour with nothing before moving back close to the boat ramp for weight in.

At this point I figured I’ll throw a shakey head and try to catch one more small fish. I got lucky and caught a 12 inch bass for 38 inches total. I had about 45 minutes left and figured I am going to fish hard to try and get rid of that 10 incher.

While daydreaming and thinking about the one that got away I threw towards a log with a lot of debris around it. I got a massive hit and set the hook. At this point I am thinking this bass has to be bigger than 10 inches. Well it was and I ended up pulling in a bass almost 17 inches. This put me at 44.75 inches with only 30 minutes left. At this point I got greedy and thought I need to catch one bigger than 12 inches. I ended up catching one more but he was only 11 inches

Come weight in time my 44.75 inches was good enough for second place. I missed first place by .75 inches. The tournament started with me hoping not to get skunked and ended with me winning some YakAttack gear donated by Luther from YakAttack. First place got a rod and reel and some YakAttack gear. The SMACK tournaments have all proceeds going to Heroes on the Water so all prizes are donated. Now I am hooked and hope to make it to more of the SMACK tournaments and qualify for the Classic in October.

This tournament was one of lessons. My first lesson was that the Frontier can carry more rods than you will ever need. I carried 8 rod and reels with me but may have used 4. The Frontier was great for storing all the rods but I may have taken it to the extreme. My second lesson was a net folded up in the bottom of your kayak will do you know good. This will now be one of the first things I do to unfold my net. The third lesson is don’t give up. I caught 4 of my five fish in the last 2 hours and 3 of them in the last 45 minutes.

Kayak Fishing Exploding in KY - Bluegrass Yakmasters Open Tournament Report

Throughout the winter I was involved with a group that started the Bluegrass Yakmasters tournament series.  To kick off the series we held an open tournament on Saturday April 6.  The open was held on Cedar Creek Lake in Stanford, Kentucky.  As we set up the open and the start of our season we had no idea what to expect in terms of participation, but we many great sponsors were lined up and all had high hopes of a great event.

The open drew 75 tournament entrants which made it one of the biggest freshwater kayak fishing tournaments in the United States.   The 75 participants also made this the largest tournament ever on Cedar Creek Lake (even beating out the many bass boat tournaments held there each year).  Anglers from 5 states participated and the farthest competitor came all the way down from Wisconsin.  Along with participating in the event many signed up as club members which gives them the opportunity to participate in all club tournaments the rest of the season.  In total we are now up to 68 members.

The fishing was hit or miss as the cold weather we have been experiencing had the fish pretty scattered.  Some were able to figure them out better than others.  This was a three fish CPR (catch photo release) limit tournament and in total 1200" of fish were checked in.  Ten places were paid and the winner took home $1000 for his efforts.  Following the check in there was a raffle with close tons of prizes from sponsors.  Many lucky raffle winners took home great prizes including the grand prize which was a fully rigged Wilderness Ride115 provided by Hook1.

Now we begin the season with the first of 8 regular season events.  The first club tournament will be held on Lake Cumberland on Saturday April, 27.  Kayak Anglers must fish 5 of the 8 events to be eligible for the classic which will be a two day event held at Cedar Creek Lake at the end of the season.  The winner of the classic will receive a Frontier 10 provide by NuCanoe one of our major sponsors.
I was able to bring in several fish on the practice day, Taylor and I didn't do as well as I hoped in the tournament, but we both were able to bring bass in the Frontier.  Taylor caught the bigger one so she finished ahead of me in the tournament - I'm one proud dad Taylor fished hard all day long.  I managed to catch a bass a few minutes after her to get on the board.  If this had been a trout tournament I would have fared much better.  I brought 3 rainbow trout in on the day and they were between 14-16 inches each.  What a beautiful day to be on the water and be able to spend it with my daughter.
Finishing in first place with 3 fish measuring 59.75" was Randy Collins.  Randy brought home $1000 in winning.  We had a tie for second which went to a tie break (biggest fish).  Winning the tie breaker and finishing second was Jay Wallen bringing home $430.  Gavin Davis finished in 3rd place and  brought home a respectable $270.

A huge event in the state of Kentucky which makes me look forward to the rest of the tournament season.  I will be fishing the Bluegrass Yakmasters, Elkhorn Creek Series and some of the SMACK series.  Can't believe how kayak fishing has exploded in the bluegrass state seems not long ago it was hard to find somebody to kayak fish with - now we are everywhere!  Big props to Canoe Kentucky (shop in Frankfort KY) seems like many of the boats I saw on the water were from CanoeKY.  Talking to Nathan the owner in the last few years kayak fishing sales have exploded!  OFF to Elkhorn Creek for the next tournament!

About Me
Gulf War Veteran. Truck Driver by trade. I am an idea man. I see things differently than most. I see something, design it in my head, put it to paper or the computer. I build it, tweak it and/or rebuild it until I get it done MY WAY. I love fishing from a kayak. The Frontier gives me options I never had with other kayaks. I will work to explore all options and then settle for what works best for me. I would rather build something than buy it. That attitude got me named in a Popular Mechanics article about kayak fishing. (That's my only claim to fame.....So far!)

Why I Chose NuCanoe
After owning several kayaks before, I decided this time to research a new one fully. My research led me to NuCanoe. I joined the NuCanoe forum in October 2012, I did not purchase my Frontier until April 2013.

What I Like Best
I like the freedom of movement. I can sit, stand or even take a short walk, about 3 steps, and not worry about getting wet.

Fishing & Rigging
I love fishing. I also love rigging my kayak in different ways just to see how it will or will not benefit the way I can fish or get to my favorite fishing spot.

My Favorite NuCanoe Story
I recently went to a Demo Day.  My local club decided to set up a tent  there to promote the sport and club membership. I was asked to bring my NuCanoe to show how we rig the kayaks differently. Once there I decided to launch my NuCanoe and use my trolling motor to run circles around the Hobie kayaks. I got the looks that I wanted and even was able to steer a few people toward my local NuCanoe dealer.

Ditch Rapids in the Frontier 12

You know you have wanted to...  You, like me, have driven by those ditches flowing with snow melt and thought to yourself, "You know, I bet I could canoe down that."  Well, this year my Frontier 12 and I took to my front ditch in pursuit of the fabled ditch rapids.

I launched my Frontier and settled in for my historic journey down the ditch.  Besides the odd looks from a couple of my daughters friends walking by, which I am writing off as jealousy, I was on my way.  With just enough water to float my Frontier, and a flow powered by steep hills and plenty of snow, I was off on my way down through the ditch rapids.

Now, as the weather continues to warm and the ice recedes I can venture out on the big water.  But the thoughts of my journey down through the ditch rapids will always warm my heart.....ok, maybe not.  But what else is a guy to do when the opportunity presents itself and he hasn't be out in his Frontier in months???  A ditch filled with flowing water starts to look pretty darn inviting!!!

About Me
I grew up fishing Galveston bay since I was eight years old. I have been an advocate kayak fishermen for five years now. I enjoy fishing the saltwater marshes and pursuing flounder in Galveston bay complex.
Why I Chose NuCanoe
This is the most versatile kayak I ever seen out on the market today. The ability to change from a solo to a tandem kayak in seconds.

What I Like Best
The stability of the Frontier. Being able to stand up and sight cast for redfish in the saltwater marshes and brackish backwaters is awesome.

After trying out different types of kayaks, I believe the Nucanoe has the best concepts on kayaks.
I get ideas on designing parts or modifying other parts to adapt to my Frontier every time I use my
Nucanoe.

My Favorite NuCanoe Story
Fishing a creek near Lake Livingston with one of my friends for white bass. We launch our kayaks and cruised to our spot. The fishing started off slow that morning but it really picked up late morning. Another boat pulls up to our spot and anchors along the bank. This guy only caught two fish. Meanwhile we are steadily pulling in fish using saltwater lures. We lost count after a two man limit of fish. Continued to fish a little more and the fishing started slowing down again so we decided to pack it up and go home. This will be a trip I will never forget.

      About Me
I am a designer by degree. I love to fish and hunt. I am always trying to tinker with different things and see if I can make them better or add functionality. So I like to use my design skills to improve or design new hunting and fishing gear.

      Why I Chose NuCanoe
Simplicity & stability. I wanted something that I could stand and fish from while chasing Reds on the bay and be able to handle the rougher waters of lakes. I am also a larger guy and I needed something that had a high weight capacity.

      What I Like Best
I like the ability to stand and fish. I also like the fact that I do not feel like I am going to "turtle" all the time. Makes it much more enjoyable.

      Favorite Fishing Hole
Fishing for bass of Richland Chambers and Reds in the bay.

      My Favorite NuCanoe Story
The first time I took it out my son was in the front fishing as I paddled him around. He thought it was so cool to be able to stand and fish for bass as I motored him around. I'm getting him his own yak!

Love to catch Bass, Catfish, Crappie, Gar and Reds in my NuCanoe.  I document all of this on my blog with my friend Shane at www.fivegallonbucketlist.com.

      Why I Chose NuCanoe
Stability above all... but after I got it I found out that I had not actually given up much in other areas to gain that stability. I expected a barge that was hard to paddle and get around in. I was pleasantly surprised to find that was not the case at all. I got the stability AND the performance I needed all in one cool little package.

      What I Like Best
Stability stability stability...Easy to paddle, easy to manuever. Fun to be in. A great all around little boat with the capacity and performance to keep me interested and safe in any situation.

      Getting Out There
I love to put out jug lines after dark and catch big Catfish and Gar. I hope to get some video up very soon doing this in my NuCanoe.

I enjoy fishing, hunting and spending time on the water. I am involved in scouts and in my church where I work with kids.  I have been kayak fishing since 2008 in and around NC and VA.  As a Veteran, I love helping with  Heros On The Water kayak fishing outings in the Tide Water Area.

      Why I Chose NuCanoe
I first found the NuCanoe in 2008. I was looking for a water craft that fit my needs (safe, stable, and
